Veterinary Internship

Every year, a position is available for 6.5 months, March 1st through September 15th, for licensed veterinarians eager to gain experience and a working knowledge of equine reproductive management while performing advanced techniques.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reproductive management of client mares and the recipient herd. This includes hormonal treatment, palpation/ultrasound, artificial insemination with fresh, cooled and frozen semen, reproductive evaluations, uterine therapy, uterine culture, cytology and biopsy, assist with and perform embryo recoveries and transfers, oocyte aspiration.
  • Stallion procedures performed periodically include semen collection, evaluation and processing for immediate insemination or cooling, reproductive evaluations, and stallion handling. Exposure to semen freezing will also occur.
  • Maintaining a vaccination and deworming schedule for client and recipient mares. This includes making sure all items on the Horse Health Checklist have been done.
  • Initial involvement with emergency cases at ERC while having the ability to consult with other veterinarians associated with ERC.
  • Periodically perform on-farm reproductive services.
  • Establish the use of invoices, in-house forms, stall book and pharmacy records, client communication, formulating letters (i.e. reproductive evaluation letters).
  • Help supervise laboratory and veterinarian technicians to make sure their responsibilities are properly being performed.
  • Be a co-mentor in our veterinary externship program making sure that all student externs are exposed to several aspects of both stallion and mare reproductive management.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Desired:

  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine with a large animal/horse emphasis.
  • Comfortable working with horses.
  • Basic understanding of reproductive physiology.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to create a good repore with clients.
  • Desire to learn new reproductive techniques.
  • Work well with other staff and maintain a teamwork atmosphere.
  • Virginia Veterinary license is required for the position.
